A consignment of yaba pills, worth around Tk7.5 crore, has been seized by Bangladesh Cost Guards (BCG) in Cox's Bazar.
Almost 150,000 pills were seized at the Jaliapara area, of Teknaf's Sabrang union, around 4am on Wednesday.
Chittagong Coast Guard Assistant Director (Intelligence) Lt Commander Abdullah Al Maruf told the Dhaka Tribune: "Acting on a tip-off, a team of coastguards raided the area and signaled a suspicious fishing boat to stop so that it could be searched.
"Upon receiving the signal, the smugglers dropped a large plastic bag in the water and fled towards the border of Myanmar."
He said the coastguards later recovered the floating plastic bag and seized the yaba pills—which was why they could not detain the smugglers.
The estimated market price of the seized yaba pills is around Tk7.5 crore.
"The seized tablets have been handed over to Teknaf police station for further action," Lt Commander Abdullah said.
