Road built over canal for a brick kiln

As a result, the adjacent 200 acres of land meant for cultivation is now in danger as the canal was essential for irrigation. It was fully dredged only two years ago, after the local farmers petitioned to the government repeatedly for a long time complaining about waterlogging in the area that adversely affected their crops. Locals allege that the member of Someshpur Ward under Bhadur UP of Ramganj, Salauddin Sumon, and Mahbubur Rahman Munshi of Dehala village along with other soil traders are behind the efforts to fill up the canal with a view to linking Someshpur and Shahapara. In response to the allegations, Sumon claimed that the road had been built over private land. “The canal is not a government property. We will restore the canal after the soil hauling for building the brick kiln is over.” Local sources say that several other soil traders had collected topsoil from the surrounding crop land by force from the farmers whose livelihoods depend on cultivation, and built four brick kilns. When contacted, Ramganj UNO Mohammad Abu Yusuf said: “I have ordered the people involved in construction of the road to remove it. We will take legal steps if the order is not followed.”
