There are allegations that a displaced Rohingya man from Myanmar has been appointed as the committee president of a Bangladesh Chhatra League unit in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban.
According to sources within the organization, the Rohingya man, Mohammad Nur, was announced as the committee president of Ward 1 Masjid Ghona Chhatra League unit on September 9.
A letter, signed by Naikhongchhari Sadar union unit President Mohammad Foysal Azad and General Secretary Morshed Alam Emon, appointed: Nur as committee president, Mobarak Hossain as vice-president, Manukuzzaman Manik as general secretary, Md Dalim as joint-general secretary, and Osothai Mong Marma as organizational secretary.
When asked about the identity of the new committee president, Foysal confirmed that Nur arrived in Bangladesh from Myanmar years ago.
Party sources revealed that Nur had been living as a refugee in Naikhongchhari Rohingya Camp, but later moved to Ward 1 of the Masjid Ghona area some time ago.
Some allege that he obtained a counterfeit birth certificate with the help of some local representatives. He was reportedly appointed as the Chhatra League committee president in exchange for money, and he cannot speak Bangla clearly.
When asked for his comments on the matter, Chhatra League's Naikhongchhari upazila unit President Badar Ullah Bindu said: “I do not know whether Nur is a Bangladeshi citizen or a Rohingya from Myanmar. I will have to look into this matter.”
