Lightning strikes kill 3 in Bagerhat, Sunamganj

The lightning strikes occurred between noon and 1pm

Three people have been killed and one injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Bagerhat and Sunamganj on Wednesday.

In Sarankhola upazila of Bagerhat, Khulna, a farmer was killed after being struck by a lightning bolt around 1pm.

The deceased was identified as Bipul Halder, 45, son of Bimal Halder of Hogolpoti village, under Dhansagar union of Sarankhola upazila.

Local unionparishad member Topu Biswas said that Bipul was giving food to cattle near a cattle shed in the rain when he was struck by lightning.

Sarankhola Upazila Health Complex Officer Dr Asim Kumar Samadder said Bipul’s family members thought he was alive and brought him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj, a teenager and a boatman were killed and another injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes around noon.

Police and locals said Hridoy Das, 14, son of Lulu Das of Joynagar village under Noorai Union of Chhatak upazila, died on the spot when struck by lightning while fishing with a net in the haor.

On the other side of Chhatak Upazila, Mamun Mia, 28, of Pirojpur district, died when he was struck by lightning while working on a boat anchored in the Surma river.

Meanwhile, teenager Ranjan Debnath was injured in a similar lightning strike. He is undergoing treatment at Chhatak Upazila Health Complex.

Mohammad Atiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chhatak police station, confirmed the incidents in Sunamganj.
