A lighter vessel, carrying cement clinker, has capsized in the Bay of Bengal.

The vessel – Sheikh Fardin – capsized near Bhashan Char of Noakhali district, around 9am, on Sunday.

“All the crewmembers on board were rescued," said Nabi Alam, secretary of the Lighter Vessel Workers' Union.

Md Selim, deputy director of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, said the lighter vessel left Chittagong Port for Narayanganj around 4am.

"The vessel might have collided with another vessel and then capsized off the Noakhali coast. We will send a letter to the owner of the vessel informing him about the matter," the official said.
