Police in Faridpur have impounded the Faisal Ganjeraaj Paribahan bus that was involved in an accident that led to the death of one-year-old Akifa Khatun in Kushtia last week.

The bus was seized from Faridpur’s Notun Bus Stand area around 10:30pm on Friday, Kushtia’s Superintendent of Police (SP) SM Mehedi Hasan told reporters on Saturday afternoon.

He said the bus was found abandoned at that bus stand and was brought to Kushtia in the early hours.

No arrests were made at the time, Mehedi added, but expressed hope that they would catch those responsible for the child’s death very soon.

The bus’s owner Zainul Abedin, driver Khokan, his assistants and supervisor Yunus Master were accused in a case filed by Akifa’s father Harun Ur Rashid at Kushtia model police station on Thursday night.

Last Tuesday morning, Harun’s wife Rina Begum, carrying Akifa, was crossing the road walking past the stationary Ganjeraaj Paribahan bus near the Chourhash intersection in Kushtia.

Akifa fell on the road from her mother’s arms and sustained critical head and eye injuries when the bus started moving and hit them from behind.

The child died in the early hours of Thursday following two days of treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She was buried at Chourhash Graveyard in Kushtia after funeral prayers later that day.

The incident created uproar among people after a video, caught on a closed-circuit television camera of a nearby jewellery shop, went viral on social media.
