A suspected leader of a gang of robbers has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Pirojpur’s Indurkani upazila.
The incident occurred in Pattashi village early on Sunday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Jakir Hossain, 54, leader of an inter-district gang of robbers.
He was wanted in 11 criminal cases, said Indurkani police station officer-in-charge (OC) Nasir Uddin.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of police, in association with the members of Detective Branch, conducted a drive. They accompanied Jakir, who was arrested two days ago, to recover arms from the area around 2 am, the OC said.
Upon spotting them, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate— triggering a gunfight.
At one stage, Jakir was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries.
He was rushed to Indurkani Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Police also recovered one pipe gun, two rounds of bullets, and 12 bullet shells from the spot.
Two policemen – Sub-inspector Shadat Hossain and Constable Nasir – sustained injuries during the gunfight—and are undergoing treatment at Pirojpur Modern Hospital, the OC added.
Earlier, on August 24, police arrested Jakir in Khulna following a robbery in the upazila's Ramchandrapur village.
