Woman dies after C-section by untrained doctor in Gopalganj

After she was anaesthetized, they tied her limbs and she died during surgery due to extreme blood loss

Update : 24 Aug 2018, 04:43 PM

A pregnant housewife has died after undergoing a C-section at the Tungipara Surgical Clinic.

The Gopalganj-based clinic owner performed the surgery on Thursday night.

Following this incident, the housewife's brother, Aminul Islam, filed a murder case against the clinic owner, an untrained village doctor Nurul Huda Tuku, and his two sons – Md Mehrab Hossain and Md Nurul Odi – at the Tungipara police station.

The police arrested Md Mehrab, the clinic owner's son, this Friday morning.

The murdered housewife, Rexona Begum, 30, was the wife of Md Azizul Molla, from the Keralkopa village of Tungipara upazila sadar.

Aminul Islam, the housewife's brother and plaintiff of the case, said: "My pregnant sister was admitted to the Tungipara Surgical Clinic, on Thursday at 2pm, to deliver the baby.

"She was taken to the operation theatre at 9pm by the clinic owner, Tuku, and his sons. There were no other doctors in the clinic at that time. After she was anaesthetized, they tied her limbs. My sister died during surgery due to extreme blood loss."

He also told the Dhaka Tribune that four other women have lost their lives after enduring the owner’s caesarean sections. Nurul Huda and his sons have no actual training in surgery. The two brothers learned surgery from their father and help him out in the clinic.

Aminul Islam claimed that the clinic owner, and his sons, killed his sister—and for that reason he filed a murder case against them.

Whereas, the clinic owner Nurul Huda said: "During the surgery, Dr Sadhon Bosu was present along with both of his well-trained sons."

He asserted that Sadhon Bosu left the facility after seeing the end result of the operation. He confessed that they tied the patient's limbs because they were afraid the patient might move during the surgery. However, he could not state the reason for the housewife's death.

Tungipara upazila health and family planning officer Dr Niaz Mohammad said: "There is no doctor named Sadhon Bosu in the Gopalganj district. He invented this person in his mind to defend himself."

Officer In-Charge (OC) of Tungipara Police Station said: "The arrested son of the clinic owner has confessed that the surgery was done by the three of them—even though they were not experienced in it. And this operation caused the death, which makes it a murder case—therefore a case has been filed.

"They are also investigating the case of the four women who died in the clinic beforehand. They are on the lookout to arrest Tuku and his son Odi."
