Vehicles were seen moving slowly on Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways on Friday because of a huge rush of homeward-bound people ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Highway police said the number of passenger and good-laden vehicles started to increase early in the morning, which caused the traffic jam, reports UNB.
A 15km tailback formed on the Dhaka=Mymensingh Highway in Tongi, Cherag Ali, College Gate, Gazipura, Borobari, Board Bazar and adjoining areas.
The drivers' tendency of overtaking other vehicles was the prime reason behind the traffic gridlock, said highway police.
Additional traffic police were deployed at different points on the highway.
On Dhaka-Tangail Highway, a 10km tailback formed from Kharajora to Chandra as the number of cattle-laden vehicles increased on the road on Friday, said highway police.
