Month of Mourning begins

Ruling party Awami League has organized a month-long program to commemorate the occasion

Update : 02 Aug 2018, 02:36 AM

On August 15, 1975, a group of disgruntled army officers killed Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members, causing August to later be dubbed “the month of mourning.”

Ruling party Awami League has organized a month-long program to commemorate the occasion.

Apart from the killing of Bangabandhu, two other incidents also support the month’s solemn naming.

A deadly grenade attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004 left 24 dead and wounded around 500 others, and on August 17, 2005, around 500 bombs went off at 300 locations in 63 districts within the span of half an hour
