Road communication between Bandarban and Rangamati have snapped when a bailey bridge went underwater after heavy rains battered the districts in the Chittagong Hill Tracts for the past two days.
The traffic on the Bandarban-Rangamati road came to a halt after the rising water levels of the Sangu River left the bridge at Balaghata in Bandarban’s Polupara submerged on Tuesday morning.
The situation left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the bridge, causing immense suffering to the commuters, said the district’s Deputy Commissioner Md Aslam Hossain.
Many commuters were seen using boats to cross the inundated area.
Different areas including Islampur, Armypara, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Bandarban district town were also facing flooding.
The local administration has also warned people riskily living at the base of various hills of possible landslides and urged them to move away.
Landslides, triggered by heavy monsoon rains and deforestation, are common in the hilly areas and claim many lives every year.
