A suspected robber has been killed in a so-called gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the Harinakundu area of Jhenaidah.
RAB 6 Jhenaidah Camp Company Commander ASP Golam Morshed confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, adding that the deceased suspect is Amirul Islam alias Poncha—member of a notorious robbers’ gang.
Morshed said: “A gang of robbers had gathered in the Bhaturia area to prepare for a robbery. The culprits began firing on a RAB team which was patrolling the area around 11:30pm on Tuesday.
“RAB retaliated in response to their gunfire, leaving one robber injured on the scene. He was taken to Harinakundu Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.”
RAB identified the man as Amirul Islam after further investigation, and found that he is accused in a total of 13 cases, filed on charges of murder and robbery. He hailed from Bhaina Village.
A double-barrel rifle, one bullet, 2 machetes, and some cash were also seized from the spot.
