‘Drug dealer’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with RAB in Tangail

Update : 13 Jul 2018, 12:09 PM

A suspected drug peddler has been killed in Tangail’s Sadar Upazila in what RAB said was a gunfight during an anti-drug operation in the district.

The man, 35-year-old Md Afzal, was described by RAB 12 CPC 3 company commander Robiul Islam as “one of the top drug lords” in the area, who is also accused in at least three cases.

“His name is on our list. Afzal used to bring in big shipments of drugs from Chittagong and Rajshahi,” Robiul told the Dhaka Tribune.

The RAB officer declined to share other names on the “list.”

He said the gunfight in which Afzal was killed took place in the early hours of Friday in the Beguntal area.

“We raided the area after being tipped off about the presence of drug dealers there. Some of the armed drug peddlers fired at our team triggering a skirmish,” Robiul claimed.

“Afzal, hit by bullets, was found lying there after the gunfight was over. We took him to Tangail General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead,” he added.

Robiul said two RAB members injured in the skirmish, were given first aid.

He claimed they recovered a foreign-made pistol, five bullets, a magazine, 200 bottles of contraband phensedyl, and 1,042 yaba pills from the spot.

More than 100 suspected drug dealers have been killed in alleged gunfights and thousands arrested since the government launched a crackdown on drugs in mid-May.
