The low-lying areas in Kurigram have been deluged due to a rise in water levels following incessant rainfall and increased water flow from upstream.
Hundreds of people in the district are marooned by the floods.
According to Water Development Board, water levels in all the rivers in the district – including the: Dharala, Teesta, Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra – are currently flowing above the danger level.
A flood control embankment was damaged due to the rise in water levels in the Dharala River, leaving several houses on the river bank inundated, said Holokhana union parishad Chairman Omar Faruk.
The Water Development Board’s Executive Engineer Md Safiqul Islam said many other flood control embankments in Chilmara, Ulipur, and Nageswari were also damaged.
Efforts are under way to repair the embankments, he said.
More than 100 families were affected by floodwater due to the rise in water levels of the Teesta River, Gharialdanga union parishad Chairman Rabindranath Karmakar said.
Rajarhat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rashedul Haque Pradhan said they are preparing to assist those affected.
Shoals of the Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra basins have been inundated; however, this has not yet affected the locals, said local representatives.
Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Sultana Parvin said they have made all preparations to address the situation.
