Bangladesh Chhatra League activists have attacked an alleged Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir activist, and student of Rajshahi University, for defaming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The incident occurred at around 12:30pm on Wednesday in the courtyard of the Senate building.
The victim, Sheikh Jasim Uddin Bijoy, is a third-year university student of Arabic. He was accused of posting defamatory comments about the prime minister on Facebook on July 1.
Bijoy suffered injuries to his face and hands due to the attack and is currently receiving primary medical attention at the university proctor's office.
According to witnesses, Bijoy traversed the main gate of the university, at around 11am on Wednesday, to attend an exam at his department. At that time, several activists from Chhatra League detained him in the courtyard of the Senate building.
After demanding information about Bjioy's Facebook status, the activists began beating him. Later, they handed Bijoy over to university Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman after he came over to investigate the situation.
General Secretary of University Chhatra League Unit Faisal Ahmed Runu said: "We interrogated Bijoy because of his derogatory comments regarding the prime minister on Facebook."
He added: "Later, upon coming to know of his affiliation with Shibir, we handed him over to the proctor."
Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said: "Bijoy is getting treatment at the proctor's office. Action will be taken against him after talking with the police."
Meanwhile, quota reform movement protestors planned a sit-in, in front of the university’s administration building,at 11 am on Wednesday. But it was delayed due to inclement weather.
Allegations were raised against Chhatra League for attacking several protestors in front of the administration building. However, they have denied attacking anyone except Bijoy.
