Three people have been killed in overnight flooding in Moulvibazar’s Komolganj Upazila. At least five others are still missing.
Locals recovered the bodies of Sattar Mia, 55, his son Karim Mia, 25, and Kamal Mia, 40, on Saturday morning. All three were missing since Friday night.
The names and identity details of the missing is not known yet.
Police also reported a fourth death, that of a 24-year-old man caught in the flooding on Saturday afternoon in Kulaura upazila.
Army joins rescue
The army has joined efforts to rescue stranded locals in Kulaura and Rajnagar where the overflowing Monu River has left thousands of people stranded since Friday night.
Deputy Commissioner Md Tofayel Ahmed said the army was working in three upazilas. “They are working on the flood protection embankment of Monu River,” he said.
Tofayel said they had allocated 143 tons of rice for the flood affected area and have already distributed Tk180,000 among the victims.
5 shelters ready
The Monu River was at a 180cm above the danger level on Saturday evening near the town’s Chadnighat, Water Development Board’s Executive Engineer Ranendra Shankar Chakrabarty said.
Tofayel said they had opened five flood shelters.
The district administration asked people not to panic and to go to shelters in case of emergency.
The shelters are at Moulvibazar Government College, Moulvibazar Government Women’s College, Primary Teachers Institute, Polytechnic Institute, and Technical School and College.
