Police in plainclothes allegedly scooped up two leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from Jessore on Thursday.
They are the party’s Jessore district general secretary Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, and Jessore city unit president and former mayor Maruful Islam.
According to eyewitnesses, a team of police in plainclothes, arriving in a car accompanied by four to five motorbikes, picked the two up from near the Jessore Zilla School gate on Thursday evening, when they were distributing food and clothes among the poor.
“We learned Saberul and Maruful were picked up by police. It’s very disheartening that they were picked up right before the Eid-ul-Fitr. We condemn the action,” Delwar Hossain Khokon, organizing secretary to the district unit BNP, told the Dhaka Tribune.
Police, however, denied scooping up the BNP leaders.
“I know nothing in this regard,” Officer-in-Charge Abul Bashar of Katowali police station said.
Echoing him, Detective Branch Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman said he was not aware of any such incident.
