Two Habiganj sub-inspectors (SI) have been withdrawn after detaining Channel S journalist Sirajul Islam Jibon and torturing him all night at the police station.

The two SIs are Rakibul Islam and Abdul Mukit of Habiganj Sadar Model police station, confirmed Habiganj Police Superintendent Bidhan Tripura.

Local sources said police detained Jibon and his brother early Friday picking them both from his residence in the Josher Abda area of Habiganj town, when he and his family protested the latter's arrest on false drug charges.

Having brought him to the police station, they tortured him all night before sending him to be treated at the Habiganj Sadar Hospital.

When other journalists heard the news, they immediately organized a demonstration at the local Press Club asking for Jibon's immediate release. Police Super Tripura Bidhan then formed a three-member probe committee to look into the matter. Members of the media have been organizing various demonstrations for the withdrawal of the officers responsible.
