50 held in four districts in anti-narcotics drive

The drives were conducted from Tuesday morning till early Wednesday

Police recovered a large stack of marijuana, 101 litres of alcohol, hundreds of yaba pills and 1055 puriyas (small packets) of heroin during drives in four districts.

In Dhaka, the DMP arrested 18 people while the RAB arrested one from two areas of Dhaka city, in the drive against drugs on Wednesday.

Confirming the news, DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman said: “Detectives carried out raids in Kamrangirchar’s Boraigram, Islamnagor, Khalish Ghat and adjacent areas between 11am to 2:30pm, a dog squad, and a special action team.”

Police also recovered 41kg of marijuana, 101 litres of alcohol, 212 yaba pills and 1,055 puriyas (small packets) of heroin during the drive.

Meanwhile, RAB arrested an infamous drug dealer, Jambu Koshai, from the Geneva camp in Mohammadpur.

RAB 2 Commanding Officer (CO) Anwar Uz Zaman said acting on a tip-off, a RAB team conducted the raid and arrested Jambu Koshai. 

In Khulna, police arrested 19 suspected drug peddlers.

Khulna Superintendent of Police (special unit) Md Anisur Rahman said seven suspected drug peddlers were detained from different areas of the district. A total of 60 grams of marijuana and 15 yaba pills were recovered during the drive, he added.

In another drive,  Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) detained 12 suspected drug peddlers and recovered liquor and 187 yaba pills, while 55 people were arrested on several other charges.

In Jessore, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members detained a suspected drug smuggler, Abul Kalam Azad, while he was trying to enter India through the Benapole border on Wednesday, recovering 193 yaba pills in his possession.

BGB Integrated Check Post (ICP) Camp Commander Subedar Abdul Wahab said: “Azad was heading towards the Indian border check post wearing an identity card of Mim International, a C&F agency.” He was stopped and interrogated by Mostafizur Rahman,a duty official at Benapole’s no man’s land and handed over to Benapole Port police station.

Law enforcement agencies have stepped up anti-drug operations across Bangladesh since the beginning of May. So far, about 132 people, mostly alleged drug dealers, have been killed, and scores of others arrested, since the drives began.

In Tangail, police arrested 11 drug peddlers in drives conducted in several places of the district from Tuesday night till Wednesday morning.

Tangail police SP Sanjit Kumar Roy said some yaba pills, cannabis and heroin were recovered from the arrestees. They were sent to the district court on Wednesday. A further 11 were arrested on several other charges.
