Extortion case against Gopalganj Awami League leader

Update : 17 Feb 2017, 02:19 PM
Fatema Begum, wife of madrasa Principal Md Anwar Hossain Khan, filed a case against SM Humayun Kabir, general secretary of Awami League's Kotalipara upazila unit, on February 14. Judicial Magistrate Shankar Kumar Bishwas took the case into cognisance and ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to look into the allegations and file a report. The court fixed March 16 for the next hearing. Humayun denied the allegations and claimed that the case was meant to harass him. According to the case, Humayun demanded Tk5 lakh from Darus-Sunnat Selehia Fazil Madrasa Principal Anwar. Fatema alleged that Humayun became the president of the madrasa’s ad-hoc committee by forging his certificate. She claimed that the Awami League leader had been pressing the principal to facilitate him in financial corruption regarding teacher recruitment and misappropriating the madrasa fund. Humayun tried to get rid of Anwar after the latter refused to collude, Fatema added. Anwar filed a certificate forgery case against Humayun on February 2 and Humayun had the principal suspended, she said. “Humayun also demanded Tk5 lakh from my husband to save his job,” she alleged. “He also threatened to kill us if we did not pay the extortion money.” The Awami League leader rejected the allegations and accused Anwar of being involved in financial irregularities and corruption. “He was served a show-cause notice and he failed to give a satisfactory explanation. He filed the certificate forgery case against me in a bid to hide his corruption,” Humayun alleged.
