Elections to the Executive Council of the Workers Welfare Association (WWA) have been held recently by a factory of Chittagong EPZ and two factories of Karnaphuli EPZ.
The workers of Topway Industries Limited, a Taiwan-Bangladesh joint venture factory of Chittagong EPZ, elected Executive Council members to the WWA on May 14.
In Karnaphuli EPZ, elections were held by workers of Gesinha Outdoor Limited, a Hong Kong-South Korea owned company, and CampValley Global Limited, a South Korean company, on May 13 and 14 respectively.
The elected representatives of WWAs actively perform like trade unions to fulfil worker demands and solve their problems as Collective Bargaining Agents (CBA).
The Government enacted “The EPZ Workers’ Welfare Association and Industrial Relations Act, 2010” in order to give rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining to EPZ workers.
239 WWAs have already been formed in the enterprises of 8 EPZs under BEPZA which are functioning independently as CBA.
