A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday destroyed around 1,100 maunds of mangoes and jailed six traders at the Mazar Road area of Mirpur-1 in Dhaka for using harmful chemicals to artificially ripen the fruits.
“Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam conducted the drive along with members of RAB-4 from 5:30am and it continued till 4:30pm,” said second-in-command of the RAB-4 battalion Maj Kazi Saifuddin Ahmed.
Maj Saifuddin said: “The mangoes were not naturally matured. The chemicals used to ripen the fruits make it harmful for the consumers’ health.”
He also said the magistrate sentenced the six traders with different jail terms from three months to one year.
