Police have claimed to have cracked the murder case of retired school teacher Anil Kumar Das and his wife Kalpana Rani Das in Tangail.
Anil’s stepbrother Swapan Kumar alias Swapan Soumitra had planned the killing to illegally occupy his brother’s 60 decimals of land in a neighbouring village.
Swapan was joined by several drug addicts. They planned to force Anil to pass the ownership of the land in writing.
Six people directly took part in the killing on July 26 last year.
“They first smothered Anil with a pillow after he refused to sign the land-related papers. They killed his wife the same way after she witnesses her husband’s murder,” Tangail police’s Superintendent Sanjit Kumar Roy told the media on Friday.
Two of the suspects – Jahidul Islam and Forhad – arrested on May 12, confessed to their roles in the killings before Tangail’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Court.
Two others were arrested on May 15 based on the confessions.
“Swapan wanted his brother’s land. He killed Anil when the latter refused,” SP Sanjit said.
Swapan has been absconding since he got out on bail.
