Awami League leaders have termed Khulna City Corporation (KCC) polls a free, fair and peaceful election.
Awami League candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque, who was the clear victor by the unofficial counts that came in by 10pm last night, said the BNP’s allegations of vote-rigging and irregularities were baseless.
“I did not find any irregularities during the polls,” he said.
While inaugurating a hospital in Sirajganj, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim said a free, fair and peaceful election has been held in Khulna.
It was BNP’s inherent nature to continue to lie once it was rejected by the public in any election, he added.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Qauder refuted BNP’s claims of rigging in the election and said people have cast their vote spontaneously and they did not find anything that would support the allegations made by Monju in Khulna and his leaders in Dhaka.
While visiting Narayanganj’s Kanchpur area, he said the election was as fair as it had been during the Narayanganj City Corporation election.
Meanwhile, Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak at a press briefing at party president’s political office in Dhanmondi said BNP had begun raising these allegations as they anticipated the defeat of their candidates in the polls.
Nanak alleged that BNP leader Rizvi was spreading baseless allegations about KCC polls so that they could make the free and fair election questionable.
Nanak further said that for BNP, it was self-contradictory to participate in the election while questioning the election itself.
“We want to congratulate everyone participating in the election. The people of Khulna have freely exercised their franchise in a peaceful environment,” he said.
