Seven killed as nor’wester pounds Nilphamari

Fire service officials are removing uprooted trees blocking streets and highways in the affected areas

At least seven people were killed when a nor’wester hit three upazilas of Nilphamari on Thursday night.

The affected upazilas are Domar, Dimla, and Jaldhaka. The storm, which hit just after 9:30pm and lasted for about half an hour, uprooted trees, destroyed houses and caused significant damage to crops.

Nilphamari Deputy Commission Mohammad Khaled Rahim confirmed the death toll.

“The extent of damage is still being assessed,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.

Six of deceased have been identified as Khodeza Begum, 40, Abdul Gani, 40, Jamirul Islam, 12, Ashikur Rahman, 22, and Sumaiya Akter, 27, and her three-month-old daughter Porimoni.

Fire service officials are removing uprooted trees blocking streets and highways in the affected areas.

Public representatives and government officials are visiting the storm-hit upazilas to estimate the damage.
