Khulna city polls: Miscreants open fire, hurl bombs targeting BNP-backed councilor candidate

Sultan Mahmud Pintu, BNP-backed ward councillor candidate for the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) polls, has reportedly been attacked in Khalishpur area of the district. Unidentified miscreants opened fire and hurled bombs targeting Pintu around 9:30pm on Saturday. Confirming the matter, Khalishpur police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Rotneshor Rai told the Dhaka Tribune: “No one was injured in the attack.” Pintu’s associate Sheikh Amanur said: “The attack took place 200 yards away from Pintu’s election office while he was returning to the office after prayers along with 25 to 30 people. “There was no electricity at the time of the attack.”

Attack on OC during investigation

A team led by Khalishpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosharaf Hossain was attacked by an angry mob while they went to the area to investigate about the attack on the BNP-backed ward councillor candidate. OC Mosharaf Hossain and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Liton were injured in the incident. SI Rotneshor said two people –Rosul and Nadeem—were detained in this regard. Sonali Sen, additional police commissioner and also the spokesperson of the Media Wing of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), said: “We are investigating into the matter. The OC [Mosharaf] has been admitted to a hospital. “Details regarding the matter will be disclosed in a press briefing on Sunday.”
