Two years of RU Prof Rezaul murder: Chief suspect still at large

Update : 23 Apr 2018, 03:39 PM
Rajshahi University teacher AFM Rezaul Karim was murdered in broad daylight on this day two years ago but police are yet to arrest the suspected mastermind, Shariful Islam, a student of the slain professor. A Rajshahi court is scheduled to deliver the verdict in the murder case on May 8. “It is really upsetting that the man who planned the killing is absconding,” Karim’s daughter Rizwana Hasin Shotovi said. “We hope he will be caught and sentenced to death with the other killers.” State counsel Entajul Haq Babu said they had proved the complicity of all the accused with the professor’s murder and hoped that the court would hand down the maximum penalty.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police’s Senior Assistant Commissioner Iftekhar Alam said they had put a bounty on Shariful. “But we could not trace him. We are not even sure if he is alive but the detective branch is continuing its search,” he added. Shariful has been missing since his teacher’s murder. Rajshahi police say they suspect he is hiding in India. Police pressed charges in court against eight suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh on November 6, 2016. They are Khairul Alam Badal, Osman, Nazrul Islam, Shariful Islam, Ripon, Abdus Sattar, Rahmatullah and Maskawat. Badal, Nazrul and Osman were killed in alleged gunfights with police. Ripon, Abdus Sattar, Rahmatullah and Maskawath have been given confessional statements under Section 164 before the court.
