Safe birdhouses in Tangail to protect them from natural disasters

Update : 22 Apr 2018, 01:41 AM
Birdhouses are being constructed in Tangail to protect birds from natural disasters. Clay pots have been strategically placed on trees in the Nikrail union of Bhuapur upazila. Imran Prodhan Robin, founder of local volunteer organization, Ancholik Biborton Club, took the initiative to build the birdhouses with the help of locals in order to safeguard the biodiversity in the area. Sources said, with the summer heat wave, storms are also a regular feature of this season. Birds become helpless in stormy weather, and a lot of birds die in their own homes. Seeing this, bird-lover Imran used clay pots to construct safe homes for the aerial animals on trees. These pots have two big entrances on either side, with small holes drilled into the bottom so that any water that enters leaks out. This open design enables birds to use these pots comfortably, and over a hundred of them have been placed on trees in the area. Imran says that over a thousand of these will be placed on trees over the next two months Abdullah Al Numan/Dhaka TribuneMany people of the area have been inspired by Imran’s efforts. When asked about the matter, Imran said: “We are trying to make sure these birds have a safe haven to live and breed in. We plan to place almost a thousand such pots in the area over the next two months. This way, many endangered species of birds will be able to safely propagate." Bhuapur Upazila Agriculture Officer Ziaur Rahman said: “This is a wonderful initiative, and we welcome it as an administrative body of the area." “Birds will be safe because of the efforts of a few caring individuals. Moreover, the bird population of the area will increase,” he added. Imran previously carried out this effort in a few other upazilas of Tangail with the help of the former district administrator. Birds are still thriving in those areas.
