Reforming the quota system is necessary, even if to protect the reputation of the freedom fighters, renowned author and academic Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said on Monday.
The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) professor made the statement at the university's Dr MA Wazed Miah IICT building in response to reporters' questions on the ongoing quota reform movement.
“People are angry mainly because of the quota allotted to freedom fighters' family members. Because of this, at the end of the day, it is the freedom fighters and their families who are facing the ire and humiliation,” he said.
Urging everyone to remain careful so the freedom fighters are not humiliated in the course of the movement, Zafar Iqbal said: “We need to reform the existing quota system for the sake of the freedom fighters, to protect them from disrespect. The purpose of the quota system is to help a particular community progress if they do not get the opportunity to do so. But if that quota system hampers other people's opportunities, it loses its merit. The quota system must be balanced and logical.”
Zafar Iqbal also heavily condemned the police assault against the quota reform demonstrators. “They [police] went too far by attacking the students,” he said.
