Awami League infighting leaves 25 houses burnt in Madaripur

A clash between two factions of the Awami League led to the torching of at least 25 houses in Kalikapur area of Madaripur sadar upazila. The clash began Monday night and continued until the next morning. According to locals and police, the clash erupted centring on a longstanding dispute between Kalikapur Union Parishad Chairman Ezaz Akon and his arch-rival Shaheb Ali Matbor of the same locality. During Monday’s conflict, supporters of the two factions exploded over a hundred Molotov cocktails, creating widespread panic among the locals. Of the two factions, one is backed by Shipping Minister Shahjahna Khan’s brother Obaidur Rahman Kalu Khan and the other is loyal to Shahjahna’s cousin Pavelur Rahman Khan. Kamrul Hassan, officer-in-charge of Madaripur sadar police station, said they had detained a man over the incident. “The two groups are preparing to file separate cases in this regard. Additional troops have been deployed in the locality”, he added.
