A man has been shot dead during a violence that erupted at a polling centre in Tangail, before the voting for UP election started. The deceased is Abdul Malek, 45. The incident occurred in Sagardighi of Ghatail upazila around 3am on Thursday. The particular polling centre was later shut down by the district election officer. Confirming the matter, Tangail Superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy said: “Hundreds of miscreants attacked the Sagardighi polling centre and attempted to hijack the ballot papers. "Police, with consent of the presiding officer, opened fire to bring the situation under control. We have learned that a person has been killed in the incident.” Locals said the polling centre, situated in a government primary high school, was besieged by the supporters of independent candidate Habibullah Bahar, after they heard rumours about supporters of Awami League candidate Hekmat Sikder engaging in electoral fraud there. District Election Officer Tajul Islam has confirmed that the Election Commission has suspended voting in the Sagardighi polling centre.
