Zianagar upazila becomes Indurkani again

Update : 10 Feb 2017, 03:42 PM
The LGRD Ministry issued the gazette notification on Wednesday. The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reform, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, approved the proposal on January 9. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nurul Huda said that he had received the gazette on Thursday. Indurkani was renamed Zianagar during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government in 2002 after BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, allegedly under the influence of then local Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Delawar Hossain Sayedee. The Jamaat leader is serving life-term imprisonment for committing crimes against humanity in the area in 1971. A son of the war criminal, Masood Sayedee, is the incumbent chairman of the upazila. The government says the move was taken to remove confusion as the name of the police station is Indurkani while the upazila is Zianagar. Then prime minister Khaleda Zia inaugurated Zianagar Upazila during her visit on April 21, 2002. The Indurkani river police station was turned into a full-fledged police station during Zia’s tenure on July 28, 1980.
