Update : 20 Mar 2018, 11:58 PM
Preparations to welcome Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina to Chittagong city have been completed by district units of the party, with the premier set to address an election rally at the field of Patiya Adarsha High School on Wednesday. Leaders from Chittagong city and district units of Awami League told the Dhaka Tribune that the prime minister will inaugurate several development projects during the visit, including construction of the Kalurghat Rail and Road Bridge and re-dredging of the Karnaphuli River. Moslem Uddin Ahmed, president of Awami League’s Chittagong South unit, expressed his hope that this would be the biggest rally in Chittagong Awami League’s history and that over 300,000 people would attend. “We have completed all necessary preparations to welcome the mother of humanity, and have ordered all units of Awami League and affiliated organizations to work towards making the rally a success,” he added. Asking to remain anonymous, a senior leader of Chittagong city Awami League told the Dhaka Tribune that nomination seekers from all units of the party had hung banners and posters throughout the port city to impress its high command, as there were only nine months to go before the next general election. Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, acting president of Awami League’s Chittagong city unit, echoed Moslem Uddin in saying that Wednesday’s rally would be the most significant in the history of Awami League. He also said that the field of Patiya Adarsha High School was historically important, as Bangabandhu addressed the ground in 1969, 70 and 73, as did Jawaharal Nehru in 1943. Meanwhile, Mir Shahed Ali Khoka, a Bihari leader from Chittagong, said around 100 members of the Bihari community in Chittagong are also set to attend the prime minister’s rally.
