Jamaat-e-Islami’s acting chief Prof Mujibur Rahman has been detained in Rajshahi along with several other leaders of the party.
Members of Detective Branch detained the 10 Jamaat leaders from the city’s Hetemkha area around 9am on Monday, DB Assistant Commissioner Al-Amin Hossain said.
“They were holding a clandestine meeting at a building in Hetemkha,” he said. “We raided the place acting on a tip-off.”
Al-Amin said the Jamaat leaders had told them that they were meeting to discuss the upcoming city corporation election.
Other Jamaat leaders detained with Prof Mujibur are – Rajshahi district east unit chief Rejaur Rahman, west unit chief Abdul Khalek, metropolitan unit chief Abul Hashem, secretary Siddik Hossain and Chaiapnawabganj district unit chief Abujar Gifari.
The other four are – Jamaat’s Rokon Muhammad Rafiqul Islam, Mojibur Rahman, Rajshahi east unit member Moynul Hossain and party activist Tayed Ali.
DB officer Al-Amin said they were interrogating the Jamaat leaders.
The party did not make any comment immediately.
