100kg fish main attraction at 200-year-old Bogra fair

To celebrate the Hindu “Sonyasi Puja”, the annual Poradaha Fair took place in Bogra’s Gabtoli upazila on Wednesday. The main attraction of the fair was a 100kg fish from the Jamuna river, the price of which was Tk1,20,000. Since no single person could buy it, the fish was cut up and sold for Tk1,250 per kilo. Another focus of attraction was a 10kg sweetmeat shaped like a fish. Eminent elders of the area said, the tradition of this fair began almost 200 years ago, with the event being hosted near Golabari port in Gabtoli upazila of Bogra by the Hindu community in the area to celebrate “Sonyasi Puja”. The local Mondol family has been in charge of organizing the fair for generations. During the fair, the 22 owners of the 100 bighas of land on which the fair take place suspend the farming of the land. However, last year the chairman of Mohishaban Union did not authorize them to collect tolls. Because of this loss, they planted paddy in their fields, and the fair had to be organized in a smaller area nearby, they added. The elders continued: “This fair, organized every year, on the last Wednesday of the Bengali month of “magh”, has evolved into a meeting of the who’s-who of eastern Bogra. It gets its name from the place it is held in – Poradaha. People from 20 nearby villages invite their families and in-laws in anticipation for the fair, causing households to be crammed with relatives. They are treated to various meat, fish, and sweet delicacies bought at the fair. Maachmisti (Fish-like sweetmeat) was another attraction of the Poradaha Fair in Bogra on Wednesday; February 14, 2018 Dhaka TribuneGabtoli fishermen Bhola, Kashem, Laal Miya, Nannu, Jalil, and Mosta extracted the massive 100kg dwarf goonch out of the river. 80kg of this fish sold for Tk1,250 per kilo. Along with this, a 17kg wallago went for Tk1,600 per kg, 15-18kg Indian carp for Tk2,200 per kg, 8-10kg Indian carp for Tk1,200 per kg, and 10-12kg giant river-catfish for Tk1,200-1,500 per kg. Rohu and yellowtail catfish were also available at the fair. Alam Shaon, a young politician and a businessman from Fulbari, Bogra said he had purchased an eight kilo Indian carp for Tk1,200 per kg at around eight-thirty in the morning. Mohishaban businessman Abdul Latif created a 10kg sweetmeat in the shape of a fish. At his stall, he charged a whopping Tk4,000 for this sweetmeat. 1-4kg sweetmeats were also available at the shop under different names. According to sources, over 8,000kgs of sweetmeats had been sold at the shop. Apart from fish and sweets, furniture, fruits, betel leaves and nuts, toys, and crockeries were available at the fair, with Ferris wheels, merry-go-rounds, circus acts, and other games acting as attractions for children. The fair will run an exclusive day for women on Thursday. Local community service man Lutfur Rahman Sarkar Swapan said the fair was resplendent with the smiles of thousands of people Officer-in-Charge of Gabtoli Model police station Khairul Bashar said, “Poradaha Fair was well protected by the police to prevent any untoward incidents. No kind of gambling or obscene programs were allowed to take place. Nothing unsavoury happened at the fair.”
