Update : 11 Feb 2018, 09:56 PM
A worker was killed in the collapse of a shaft at the Shah Arfin stone quarry in the Companiganj upazila of Sylhet. The incident occurred when a local man tried to procure stones from a shaft belonging to one Intaz Ahmed on Sunday afternoon. The deceased Bashir Miya, 42, is the son of Rupa Miya hailing from Putamara village of the upazila. The Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Companiganj police station Dilip Kumar Debnath confirmed the matter, saying police went to the scene after hearing the news. Following this, they recovered the body and had it sent to Osmani Medical College morgue for post mortem. Over the last year, 19 workers have lost their lives at the now infamous Arfin Tila. Of these, nine are being investigated as murder cases. Despite at least 30 raids in the area by local authorities, stone mining has not stopped.
