Update : 31 Jan 2018, 07:46 PM
Corporal punishment, a crime declared illegal by the High Court, appears to be a habit some teachers find difficult to forget. A madrasa teacher in Jhalakathi believed it was proper to punish his students by making them drink the water used to wash shoes. On Sunday, Md Maniruzzaman, a teacher at Bikna Dinia Mahibullah Madrasa, was expecting his second grade students to deliver classwork of writing from number 1-50.  When some of the students could not complete the task as asked, he asked the rest to wash their own shoes and preserve the water. Then he forced the students who could not write to drink the water. Several students fell ill and one of the parents filed a case under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act 2000 with Jhalakathi Sadar police. A number of students were hospitalized and had to be taken to Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital Jhalakathi Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Tazul Islam said Maniruzzaman was arrested and produced before a court on on Wednesday morning.
