Municipality employees to begin 3-day nationwide work abstention on January 28

Update : 26 Jan 2018, 11:25 PM
The Bangladesh Association of Pourasava Service (BAPS) has called a three-day work abstention program in the municipalities across the country from Sunday to press home their demand for payment of overdue salaries and benefits. BAPS President Md Abdul Alim Mollhah confirmed it on Friday. BAPS General Secretary Md Sahidul Islam said employees of 226 of the 327 municipalities across Bangladesh have not been getting their salaries and allowances regularly. Payment of a total of Tk516 crore in salaries and allowances is due at present. “Paying the salaries in all the municipalities requires a fund of Tk 620 crore. This is a tiny amount, and the government, if it is willing, can afford to pay it from the treasury,” Sahidul added.

Earlier on January 15 morning, the municipality employees launched two-day work abstention to press home the same demand. However, they called off the protest around 12 noon the same day after receiving assurances from government high-ups, the BAPS president said. At that time, the protesting employees gave the government an ultimatum of 15 days to meet their demands. This article was first published on banglatribune.com
