Two armed robbers were shot dead during a gunfight with the police in Sarail, Brahmanbaria.
The deceased Bashar, 32 and his accomplice Entejar, 31, were members of a local armed robbery gang.
Five members of the police force including the officer-in-charge have been injured in the incident which took place around 4am Sunday.
Officer-in-Charge Mofij Bhuiyan confirmed the incident. He said around midnight the police received information that a gang of armed robbers were preparing for an attack in the Dhaka-Sylhet highway’s Shahbajpur area. The police conducted a raid and detained five members of the gang as a result of the late night operation. After a brief interrogation, the robbers gave the police information about the gang’s hideout.
Based on their information, the police ran another raid. Bashar and Entejar – two of the robbers – were taken along for the raid. During the operation, they were shot at by their own gang members when the police have discovered them. The police fired back in retaliation and Bashar and Entejar were fatally injured.
The OC claims that during the gunfight five members of the police, including himself, were injured. The police recovered various locally made firearms and weapons from the location including cartridges, pipe-guns and machetes. A case will be filed in this regard with Sarail police station.
