Section 144 imposed in Kushtia after BCL, JSD call simultaneous meetings

The local administration imposed Section 144 at Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia as two political organisations -- Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) --called their meetings at the same venue simultaneously on Saturday. Md Sahinuzzaman, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Kumarkhali, imposed the restriction from 11am to 10pm to fend off any untoward situation. Local JSD leaders called a demonstration at Gorai Complex Auditorium protesting a clash between the activists of the two parties that left a UP member and JSD supporter --Abdur Rahim Sheikh -- critically injured, he said. Meanwhile, Chhatra League activists also announced to hold a meeting marking the success of the ruling party at the same place at the same time, he added. The UNO imposed the emergency law to maintain law and order anticipating eruption of possible conflicts. He also said that additional police have also been deployed at throughout the town.
