Two groups, for and against the construction of the plant, had clashed at Gondamara union in Banshkhali upazila on Wednesday, where 16 others were also injured. Local business conglomerate S Alam Group is setting up the coal-based power plant.
According to local sources, the clash ensued when followers of Liakat Ali and Nurul Mostafa Sangram, leaders of the two factions, had assembled for a preset discussion.
Liakat Ali, a local BNP leader and convener of the Committee to Protect Homestead and Graveyard, has been leading the anti-coal power plant movement in the area, while his rival Nurul Mostafa Sangram, a local Awami League leader, is in favour of the proposed power plant.
The deceased was said to be a follower of the latter.
On April 4 last year, at least four protesters were killed and 30 more injured in a similar agitation programme on Gondamara School premises of the upazila.
On February 16, the government signed a deal allowing the joint venture of S Alam Group and China’s SEPCO-3 Electric Power Construction Corporation and HTG Group to build an ultra supercritical thermal power plant with a net capacity of 1224MW at a cost of $2.4bn.
