UPDF: Police refused to accept Mithun Chakma murder case

Update : 09 Jan 2018, 12:41 AM
Khagrachhari Sadar police refused an attempt by the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) to register a case over the murder of its organizer Mithun Chakma. Mithun was shot dead by unknown assailants in the upazila on January 3 afternoon. “After the killers obstructed Mithun’s family from filing a lawsuit, we stepped forward to lodge a case, but local police refused to take it,” Micheal Chakma, a UPDF leader, said at a press conference organized by the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)-based political group in Khagrachhari on Monday.

UPDF said that by filing a case on their own after refusing to take any lawsuits from anybody outside the deceased’s family, police have proved their backing for Mithun’s killers. Khagrachhari Sadar police station’s Sub-Inspector AKM Mizanur Rahman filed the murder case four days after the murder on Saturday night, against eight unidentified persons. “Police themselves filed a case regarding Mithun Chakma’s murder, which proves that they are patronising the murderers,” Micheal added.
