Khagrachhari Sadar police refused an attempt by the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) to register a case over the murder of its organizer Mithun Chakma.
Mithun was shot dead by unknown assailants in the upazila on January 3 afternoon.
“After the killers obstructed Mithun’s family from filing a lawsuit, we stepped forward to lodge a case, but local police refused to take it,” Micheal Chakma, a UPDF leader, said at a press conference organized by the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)-based political group in Khagrachhari on Monday.

UPDF said that by filing a case on their own after refusing to take any lawsuits from anybody outside the deceased’s family, police have proved their backing for Mithun’s killers.
Khagrachhari Sadar police station’s Sub-Inspector AKM Mizanur Rahman filed the murder case four days after the murder on Saturday night, against eight unidentified persons.
“Police themselves filed a case regarding Mithun Chakma’s murder, which proves that they are patronising the murderers,” Micheal added.

During the media briefing, UPDF central leader Natun Kumar Chakma demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and read out the platform’s upcoming programmes protesting the killing.
The UPDF announced a seven-point programme and condemned the incident of the administration imposing restrictions on Mithun Chakma’s funeral.
