Nobody was killed in the crashes on Wednesday evening as the four crew members of the two planes all managed to eject safely before impact and were rescued by locals in good shape, confirmed the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate. According to an ISPR press release, the two YAK-130 training planes took off at 5:56pm from Chittagong’s BAF Base Zahurul Haque but lost radio contact after 30 minutes. According to a source, Group Captain Sharif and Squadron Leader Monir were flying one of the aircraft, while Wing Commander Azim and Wing Commander Rajib were in the other.

At around 6:30pm, one of the planes crashed into the house of a local named Abdus Sattar in the Putibila area of Moheshkhali, while the other ditched into a plantation of betel leaf vines and an aubergine field owned by one Nurul Alam Nuru at Lombaghona Bazar area. Three people, including one child in Sattar’s house, had sustained injuries. BAF has already deployed a 50-strong team to sweep the remains of the two aircraft from the island and is reportedly using Moheshkhali Adarsha High School premises as the temporary dumping ground of the wreckage. Cox’s Bazar Fire Service station In-Charge Safayet Hossain said: “A team of the air force, led by Squadron Leader Major Nazmul, are carrying out the salvage operation and assessing damage. The fire-fighters are also assisting the air force members.”
