Lalmonirhat BCL leader suspended over accusations of torturing boy

A local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), which is the student wing of ruling party Awami League, has been suspended over the accusation of torturing a boy in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat. Ashiq Babu, who has been serving as the joint general secretary of Mohishkhocha Union Chhatra League, was suspended on Wednesday following an emergency meeting of the party. Aditmari upazila unit of Chhatra League President Kamal Hossain Sarkar has confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune. “Upon initial investigation, Chhatra League found evidence of his [Ashiq] involvement in the incident, and has decided to suspend him after an emergency meeting,” Kamal said. According to local people, Ashiq called the boy, Emdadul Haque, 12, on his mobile phone on Tuesday, and asked him to come to Mohishkhocha Bazar. As soon as the boy arrived, Ashiq took him to a nearby garden and tied him to a tree.Boy Suspension order of Ashiq Babu | Moazzem HossainThe Chhatra League leaders interrogated Emdadul about a missing bicycle, but the boy could not tell him anything about it. Ashiq then started to torture the boy by mercilessly beating him. People nearby rescued Emdadul after hearing his screams of pain and rushed him to Aditmari Upazila Hospital. Anju Ara, the boy’s mother later filed a written complaint with the Aditmari Police Station the same day. “After my husband passed away, my son took over the responsibility to run a tea stall in Mohishkhocha Bazar. Apart from being the sole bread-earner of the family, he also studies. I want exemplary punishment of those who assaulted my son,” Anju Ara added. Meanwhile, Ashiq Babu could not be reached for comments over the incident. Responding to a query, Aditmari police station Officer-in-Charge Horeshwar Roy said: “A case has been filed against Ashiq Babu and two others over the incident.
