It was around 11:30am on Thursday when some patients and their relatives discovered a little baby girl crying on the stairs at the old building of Feni Sadar Hospital.
Wrapped in an off-white shawl, the newborn was clad in warm clothes as it was freezing out there.
Without wasting much time looking for her guardians, they picked up the baby, about two months old, from the spot and informed the matter to some on-duty ayahs (attendants), who led to her recovery.
Residential Medical Officer Dr Asim Kumar Sahah of the hospital said they learnt the matter after a ward master received the newborn, aged between 50 and 60 days, from a nursemaid.
“Until the afternoon (on Thursday), we waited for her parents to take her back, but to no avail. Nobody contacted us from her family,” he said.
Finally, the baby girl was handed over to the District Social Welfare Office, the physician said, adding that, the baby, except for her cleft lip, is quite fit.
"We suspect that she was abandoned because she was born with a cleft lip," he said..
Meanwhile, the District Social Welfare Office's Additional Director Abul Hossain termed the incident of the baby being dumped in the bone-chilling cold as inhuman.
He told the reporter that the government organisation has temporarily taken responsibility for the little girl.
“She is now at our day-care centre,” he stated.
