6 fishermen return from Myanmar after serving jail

Six Bangladeshi fishermen have returned home from Myanmar, each having served upto 14 months in prison under the regime there. Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) handed them over to a Bangladeshi delegation, after meeting near the border on Monday. The fishermen are Rashid Ullah, 32, son of late Khoella Miah of Oliabad village of Teknaf upazila; Hamid Hossain, 37, son of Saer Mohammad of Saint Marten island; Saddam Hossain, 22, son of Lal Mia; Fazol Ahmed, 35, son of Oshiur Rahman; Mohammad Hossain, 35, son of Ismail Hossain; and Hasim, 22, son of Ali Chand of the area. Abul Khayer, sub-inspector of Teknaf Model Police Station, said the fishermen had allegedly crossed into Myanmar waters, and that is why they were held according to BGP. Any time spent in jail, considering the scale of their offence, would be harsh. Yet all six were sentenced to the 14-month prison terms.
