An SSC examinee was killed in Rupatali area of Barisal city on Sunday night after an argument over showing respect to a senior.
The victim, Abu Saleh, 18, son of Liton Mridha of Rupatali Sher-e-Bangla Road area, was a student of Nuria Secondary School in the city.
Locals alleged that one Hridoy, HSC student of Government Hatem Ali College and son of Ataur Rahman Sujon of the same area, attacked Saleh near Zahitunnesa Mahila Madrassah around 10pm Sunday.
He attacked Saleh near his house with a digging bar, hitting him on the head and the body.
A critically injured Saleh was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital where physicians declared him dead around 11pm.
The dead body was sent to SBMCH morgue for autopsy on Monday, said Abul Kalam Azad, wards master of the hospital.
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Barisal Kotwali police station Md Farhad Sardar said primary investigation suggested the incident took place based on an argument among local youths over showing respect.
Police were conducting drives to arrest the perpetrator, he added.
Saleh's uncle Masum Billah said Hridoy was angry at his nephew because of a fight they had over a game.
Locals said Saleh and Hridoy were involved in a brawl several days ago, and it was stopped by people in the neighbourhood.
