5 arrested over murder of Rangamati Awami League leader

Police have detained five people, including a Union Parishad (UP) member, from Rangamati's Jurichhari upazila in connection with the murder of Awami League leader Arabind Chakma. The detainees are Dummudya UP member Lakshmi Lal Chakma, 36, Banjogichhara UP unit Janasamhati Samity (JSS) leader Uttam Kumar Chakma, 44, Robidhon Chakma, 23, Hemanta Chakma, 24, and Manos Chakma, 24. They were arrested in a several-hour-long drive from morning to afternoon on Sunday, said Jurichhari police station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Baset.

Earlier on December 6, Jurachari upazila Awami League Organizing Secretary Arabindu Chakma was shot and killed in public. In a separate attack around the same time, Bilaichhari upazila Awami League Vice-President Russell Marma was assaulted by a group which laid upon him with melee weapons. Russell was grievously injured, but survived.
