5 killed in Kishoreganj clash

Five people including three brothers have been killed and at least 50 others injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over grabbing a water body at Charigram village in Mithamoin upazila, Kishoreganj. The deceased have been identified as Md Ferdous Mia, 50, Makhon Mia, 45, and Masum Mia, 35, three sons of Abdul Aziz, Rajib, 32, son of Sumon Mia, and Mokbul, 32, son of Ayub Reza. The clashes took place at Charigram, under the upazila’s Dhaki Union, around 1:30pm on Thursday, according to witnesses and police. Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Mithamoin police station OC Alamgir Hossain said there had been a long-standing dispute between two influential men in the village – Soleman Bhuyain and Masum – over the ownership of the water body. On Thursday, the dispute spiralled to the point where supporters of both men attacked each other, triggering a fierce clash. Masum and his brothers Makhon and Ferdous, and Soleman’s followers Rajib and Mokbul were killed on the spot, OC Alamgir added. The injured were taken to different hospitals, including the Upazila Health Complex, in the district. The OC said the situation at Charigram was under control and a case over the incident was being started. Kishoreganj’s Superintendent of Police Md Anower Hossain Khan also told the Dhaka Tribune that additional police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain peace and order.
