Update : 19 Sep 2017, 01:43 AM
A female garment worker, 27, has accused a union parishad (UP) member of rape in Ashulia, Savar. Ashulia police station Inspector (OC, operation) Jahidul Islam told reporters that the victim filed a general diary on Sunday night. Abu Taher Mridha, the UP member from Ward 6 of Ashulia, has absconded since the incident. According to family sources, the rape victim, who works at a local garment factory, lives next to the house owned by the Yearpur Union’s UP member in Narsinghpur area. As he was harassing her, she was forced to move out of her home. On Saturday night, while returning from the factory, Taher’s accomplices forcefully took her to an abandoned house in Kandail area, also owned by Taher, and locked her in a room. The accused UP member then tortured and raped her there, according to the general diary. After a few hours, Taher let her go, threatened to kill her if she informed the authorities. OC Zahidul Islam assured that the incident would be investigated and necessary action would be taken. This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
